Here is your opportunity to own a beautiful example of a scarce Civil War rifle. This is the rifle that is known to collectors as the "Turner Bahn Frei" rifle. The Turnverein (or simply Turners in America) were nationalistic German-American gymnastics (athletic) clubs. In addition to doing athletics. They were also involved in shooting and military drills. The areas with the heavily German populated demographics also use the guns during the American Civil War. Because of their design, most of the time they are damaged and repaired, but this one is beautiful from all angles. This gun fires a bullet of about .45 caliber from the full-length 28-1/4th inch long octagonal barrel. It is half-stocked with under barrel rib. The barrel still retains a superb amount of the original thick brown patina. It has a beautiful walnut stock that has the raised cheek rest on reverse. The gun has the original iron mountings with the crescent-style buttplate. It has the completely unmarked back action design percussion lock and hammer. It utilizes the double set triggers. These triggers were designed for accurate target shooting. The ones that went into Civil War service were often used for sharpshooting. The mechanics of the actions still works correctly. It has the flip up rear sight with a dove tailed front blade. It has the period steel ramrod with brass tip. The barrel is designed with the bayonet bar at muzzle to accept a saber bayonet. This rifle has the bayonet bar and is accompanied by the classic Bowie style bayonet. These bayonets are highly desired by collectors because of their fierce design and scarcity. It has the brass handle with the words "BAHN-FREI" cast into the ribbed brass grip. It still has the spring style attachment on the reverse. The blade is full-length at 18-1/2 inches and it measures 23-3/4th inches overall. The bayonet is accompanied by the original leather scabbard that is almost always missing. This one displays well but the tip of the scabbard is just barely hanging on. These bayonets were hand fitted to the rifles and this one goes onto the barrel lug but doesn't seat all the way down as you can see in the images. The Turner Civil War militia-type units were utilized by Northern Germanic Americans to guard against Confederate raiders such as John Hunt Morgan. This gun is exceptional in all regards and displays superbly.
