This is a sword that you very seldom see offered for sale! It is an original sword for the United States Marine Corps. These look very similar to the model 1840 non-commissioned officer’s sword but this is the Model 1875 Marine Corps Musician's Sword. These have the one side of the clam shell guard that is turned down and the other is the normal style of clam shell. The handle itself is made of brass just like the N.C.O. sword. The blade is shorter more like that of a musician’s sword. This one has the full-length blade that is 26 inches long. On one side of the blade it has the correct Civil War maker’s mark of the Horstmann firm of Philadelphia. The middle of the blade has the floral designs with the bold, proud letters "U.S.M.C.” for United States Marine Corps. The etching is still clear and there are no nicks or dings. The blade is held tight with the original white buff leather washer. The hilt is strong, with a nice turned-down claim shell, and displays an even dark copper colored patina. The scabbard is complete with original mounts with both screws present. The leather is strong with none repair that is hard to detect. This is a fine looking and tough to find Model 1875 Marine Corps sword and scabbard.
