This is one of the coolest designed weapons of the Civil War era. This is the gun officially known to collectors as the model 1851 Austrian carbine. They were made and imported to the states, both North & South before and during the Civil War. This one has a nice look with the metal parts having the old pitting from age. In front of the hammer on the lock plate it no longer has the date of production. They are .71 in caliber and have the very short barrel which would have made loading easy but it had to have kicked like a mule. It has the very deep multi-groove rifling. The barrel is full-length at 14-1/2 inches in length. This is the version that was made with a ramrod under the barrel and the original one is missing in action. They were produced with and without the ramrod during their manufacture. The stock has a rich medium tone all over with a nice grain. On the back side of the stock it would have originally had a double ring style saddle rings. The action works very crisply on all positions with the nipple being missing in action. This is a great looking gun that is complete and is a scarce type of weapon.
