This is a variant of Civil War staff officers sword that you seldom encounter. This is the one that was produced in Solingen, Germany by the firm of F. Poeter. It has his distinctive rabbit head design stamp at the base of the blade along with the letters "F.W.P." The blade is full-length at 31-1/2 inches and still retains the original some of the etching on each side. Each side of the blade has the eagle int he center with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" ribbon in ribbon above her. Towards the handle it has the crossed flags with the "STAND BY THE UNION" motto still partially visible. At the base of the front side of the blade it has the etched retailers marking of the famous New York firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. The handguard of the sword is constructed of cast brass and it has the attractive floral pattern with the small size "US" that lets us know the sword was designed for the higher ranks of officers. At the end of the sword, the pommel cap has the floral design as well On the handle of the sword, it has been beautifully restored for display purposes and they used the correct sharkskin as well as the entire double twist brass wire wrapping that is flanked by a small strand of brass wire on each side. The sword is accompanied by the original leather and brass scabbard. As you can see the mounts are ornately detailed with patriotic designs. Each of the pieces is beautifully detailed. The middle mount has the large "US" lettering on the back side. Down on the drag of the scabbard it has the panoply of arms in an oval with the beautiful Union eagle above. The leather on the scabbard is nice and solid with a pleasing look. This is an attractive original Civil War staff officers sword with a scarce maker and a beautiful scabbard.
