This is a very nice looking sword for the price. It is the dress sword from the veteran’s organization of Union veterans of the Civil War. Known as the G.A.R. or Grand Army of the Republic they were the best known of the veterans groups after the Civil War. This sword has a full-length 28-1/4th inch blade and is made without the etching on the blade. On each side it has the patriotic and floral designs. On one side it has the etched image of President Abraham Lincoln. At the base of the blade it has the maker marking of the Ames Sword Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The handguard has the beautiful clam shell design with the proud "GAR” lettering with anchor on one side and the crossed rifles on the other side. It is the version that is made without the handguard bow which is less seldom seen. The original handle is intact with the leather remaining over 98% of the grip. The sword is accompanied by a nice scabbard that has a fine look. The scabbard is from another sword and is the style that was made for a post Civil War naval officer's sword. The scabbard has the original drag, mounts, rings and throat intact. This is a great displaying sword for the price.
