This is a nice looking Civil War era single shot pistol. This gun measures 6 inches in overall length but the barrel of the gun is 1-3/4ths inches in length. The barrel fires a bullet of .46 caliber. The underside of the barrel has the English style proof marks still visible. It also has the ornate engraving on each side of the frame. It is engraved "COTTELL" & "CREWKERNE" on the sides of the frame. Cottell would be the retailer and the Crewkerne is a location in the Southern part of England. The action of the gun works perfectly on both positions. On the handle it has the original 1 piece wooden grip that has a beautiful untouched look. This is the style gun that would've been manufactured in the 1840's or 1850s, which is the perfect time to have seen service as a last line of defense for a Civil War soldier. This is a very cool gun that would have packed a punch.
