Here is a fine non-excavated shoulder belt plate. This is an oval version of the plate used to illustrate Plate 795 on page 472 of the Buckle & Plate book by O'Donnell & Campbell. They state how these were used by militia or cadet soldiers and how they have been variations in use since the 1840's. This one would be form the late 1800's. We date this one by the attachment hooks on the reverse. They are made of trimmed scrap brass. The plate measures 57mm by 82mm in size. It is in fine shape all the way around.
