Here is an excellent original autographed letter of Union General Mortimer Dormer Leggett ( 1821 - 1896). Leggett was born on April 19th 1821 in Ithaca, New York. He was a lawyer in Ohio before the War. He helped raise the 78th Ohio Infantry. He commanded his regiment at the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Corinth. In November 1862, he was appointed Brigadier General of volunteers and participated in theVicksburg Campaign where he suffered a painful wound. After he recovered, Leggett commanded the 3rd Division of the XVII Corps during the Atlanta Campaign Sherman's March to the Sea. He was brevetted Major General of volunteers in July 1864, and was commissioned as a major general a year later. His last action was in the Carolinas Campaign during the spring of 1865. This is a superb autograph in ink on a letter fully written in Leggett's hand. Mr. Fred Steel had evidently asked for some autographs and this letter was Leggett's reply. It is two pages and measures 5-5/8ths inches by 9 inch paper. It is accompanied by a modern made xerox image showing General Leggett in uniform. This will look superb framed up on your wall. This is a very attractive autograph that will be a solid addition to any Civil War collection.
