Excavated Civil War Insignia
Scarce Excavated Civil War Stamped Brass Company Hat Letter "K"

This is a very tough to find version of an original excavated Civil War company hat letter insignia. This is the letter "K” which would stand for the "K” company designation in the regiment. These are tough to find since there weren’t as many Company "K”s and also because of the shape they break apart easily when they were lost. It is made out of stamped brass and it measures 1-3/16 of an inch by 1-1/16 inches in overall size. It has a wonderful untouched excavated tone to the brass and even has the solder marked where at one time the original attachment loops would have been present on the back. This is a fine excavated piece of insignia. This is a great piece of Civil War history that is still affordable.

West Point Foundry 1871 Patent Marked Brass Cannon Shell Sabot

This is a nice slightly post-Civil War artifact that is still affordable. It is an original brass sabot section for a post Civil War rifled cannon shell. This is the pattern that went on the Parrott patent cannon shell. The sabot is the part of the shell that was softer than the iron body and was designed to take the rifling of the cannon barrel. This caused the shell to be more accurate in flight. You can see from the rifling marks on the outer side of the sabot that this one was fired and was thrown off in flight. It appears to be the entire sabot. What makes this one special is that around the top lip of the sabot it has the ‘W.P.F.” stamp that lets us know that it was form the West Point Foundry in Cool Springs, New York. It also has the stamp of “PATENTED 1871”. This is a neat artillery piece made after the Civil War!

14th Wisconsin Infantry I.D. Stencil Found in Kennesaw, Georgia by Bob Westbrooks

Here is a cool excavated artifact from the battle of Kennesaw! It is an original brass soldier I.D. stencil. This thin sheet of brass has the soldier's name and regiment trimmed out as a stencil. These were often sold by sutlers to the soldiers so they could mark their personal items. This one has some damage but you can still make out who owned it. It was William Miller who served with Company "D" of the 14th Wisconsin Infantry. Miller enlisted in the 14th on February 11th 1864. This was after the regiment had already served with distinction at the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Champion Hill, Vicksburg and several other places. He would have been in service during the battles of Sherman on the way to Atlanta where he lost this piece. It was found years ago in the area of Kennesaw, Georgia by Bob Westbrooks. He found this piece very early since a good bit of the paperwork that accompanies the piece is dated form 1971. He has the service records provided from the State of Wisconsin archives. The stencil measures 3.25 inches by 1.75 inches in overall size. It is nicely framed in a frame that also holds the Wisconsin service record of Miller. You get the frame, stencil and the archive of military service for the same price.
