Thomas Griswold of New Orleans Made Confederate Foot Officer's Sword

Upon first glance this one looks like a standard Civil War foot officer’s sword but when you look closer you see a hidden beauty! This is an original Confederate made officer’s sword. This is the style that was made by the famous firm of Thomas Griswold of New Orleans. At the base of the full-length 29-3/8ths inch blade it has a fine amount of the "THOS GRISWOLD” maker mark and "NEW ORLEANS” production location still remaining. The blade has been cleaned to a nice bright shine and displays quite well. The brass of the guard and pommel cap each still retains a nice amount of the original gold gilding. Griswold made one of the finest Confederate swords compared to the other style offered by Southern manufacturers. You can see the distinctive New Orleans production traits on the brass including the 2-piece joint seam on the pommel cap. You can also see where the hand guard was cast in two separate pieces and then joined together. The hand guard has the floral pattern that denotes it was for a line officer. On the handle of the sword it has the spectacular original grip intact with the entire double strand copper wire. You will have a hard time finding a better grip than this one. For display purposes the sword is accompanied by a U.S. style leather and brass scabbard. The scabbard has a replaced drag. It displays well with the sword. You are buying the sword and the scabbard is a bonus. This is a fine authentic Confederate foot officer’s sword form the famous New Orleans firm of Thomas Griswold.

Confederate Battle Pike with Wood Section Remaining

Here is a piece that you seldom see offered for sale these days! It is an original Confederate hand forged pike. These were spears made by the Confederacy during the early days of the Civil War. It measures 48.25 inches from tip to tip with the last 11.75 inches being the spear portion of the pike. It would have had a very long pole section when it was new and it has been trimmed down somewhere along the line for display and/or shipping purposes. This pattern designed so the soldier on the ground could use it for defense against a charging enemy. It didn’t take long for them to realize that if you were that close you were too close so only a relatively small amount were produced. The pike is in nice condition with the original pole intact and it even has the original cap on the bottom. This is a fantastic piece of weaponry from a war that went from spears and daggers to machine guns and torpedoes in only four years. It is a nice and original Civil War Confederate relic for $1,400.00.

Beautiful Confederate Cavalry Officer's Saber by Griswold of New Orleans

This is a beautiful untouched Confederate cavalry saber made by the firm of Thomas Griswold of New Orleans. This is the cavalry officer version with the 35.5 inch blade. The blade is a well made blade with a dove gray color patina with a smooth attractive look on both sides. At the base of the blade it has the coveted two line maker mark of the Thomas Griswold firm of New Orleans, Louisiana. The guard and pommel cap are the classic Confederate style manufacture. It has the floral patterns on both pieces that denote the sword being of officer quality rather than being made for an enlisted man. The guard has the crude splice of the two pieces which is characteristic of a New Orleans product. The top of the pommel cap also has the blurred joint seam which is also a New Orleans trait. The handle has about 98% of the original leather hanging on as well as the entire double twist wire grip. This beauty is as pure as the driven snow. It has been placed into an original all iron scabbard for display purposes. Originally it would have been in an all brass scabbard when it left the Griswold factory. It is a fantastic Confederate sword by anyone’s standards.

Fantastic Relic Condition Confederate Artillery Saber with "CS" Lettering

This is one of my favorite patterns of Confederate swords from the Civil War. It is the short bladed artillery saber made for the Confederate artillerymen. They get their design after the Roman style gladiator sword. This pattern is a fierce looking weapon but their massive design proved unwieldy in battle so they stopped making them after the Civil War started. This is why we don’t’ see many of the originals, like this one, offered for sale. This one has a great look with an almost relic appearance. The cast brass handle has the bold "CS” letters on each side of the handle as well as the star design on the end of the grip. You can see the casting grain where the brass was cast in a mold made of sand. They even filled in one of the flaws using lead on the side of the handle. These flaws are one of the traits you look for to tell the original swords from the reproductions. One thing that is cool about this one is that the ends of the crossguard were trimmed off during the time of use. It streamlined the piece and likely made it more useful as a weapon. The blade is 19 inches in length and the sword measures 24.5 inches overall. The blade has the wide single fuller on each side. The blade has the dark tone with pitting like it spent a hundred years in the cabin or smokehouse. This is a fantastic piece of Confederate Civil War artillery history.

Attic Dark Confederate Naval Cutlass with South Carolina Retailer Mark

Here is a great Confederate piece! This is the Confederate naval cutlass sold by the famous Courtney & Tennent of Charleston, South Carolina. At the base of the full-length 19 inch blade it has the rectangular retailer’s stamp from them as well as the Charleston, South Carolina location. On the top of the blade it has the actual maker’s mark of "MOLE”. Robert Mole made these for Courtney & Tennent. He was located in Birmingham, England. There is an interesting story associated with these swords and I borrow the story form the button book by Warren Tice. He states that during the Civil War, Tennent moved to England where he sold Confederate cotton bonds and acted as a middle man between the Confederate military and the British Manufacturers which contributed toward making Britain an economic ally of the Confederacy. One of the pieces he ran through the blockade was these swords. This one has a gorgeous look all over. It has a deep dark attic thick patina all over. The blade is almost black with the single fuller on each side. The edges of the double sided blade have a few shallow nicks form use that are mentioned for exactness. At the base of the blade it even has the original buff leather washer intact. The guard is made of brass but has such a thick patination all over that it almost looks to be made of iron. The brass guard is in excellent shape all over as you can see with no bend or deformities. On the handle of the sword it has the correct "Enfield” style pressed leather grip intact and as you can see it has a beautiful look all over. This one is just absolutely untouched and correct in all aspects.
