Fantastic Original Confederate 12# "Sideloader" Cannonball With Lead Plug
This is a fine Confederate artillery piece! It is an original cannonball for the 4.62 inch cannon barrel. These were better known as the 12 pounder. This one has the excellent original Confederate copper fuse plug at the top. This was designed to hold the paper time fuse in the center. These paper time fuzes burned down like a candle wick and then caused the explosion to break apart the cannonball. What is also very nice about this piece is that it is the version that has the lead "sideloader” plug. This is where the iron case shot balls would have been loaded into the ball. It has the lead plug still vividly clear on the side. The shell has been disarmed for safety. It hasn’t even been thoroughly cleaned and coated for preservation and display. Now it displays superbly from all angles. This is a solid Confederate cannon projectile with the cool side loader plug.
