Beautiful Civil War .36 Caliber Whitney Revolver with Original Blue & Case Color
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fine looking gun. It is an authentic Civil War .36 caliber revolver from the famous Whitney Company. This is the style referred to by collectors as the Whitney Navy revolver. It is called that because of the .36 caliber bore size of the barrel, not particularly because they were used by the navy. These were a favorite of the cavalrymen when they could get one. On the back of the full-length 7-3/4ths inch barrel it has the clear Whitney maker's mark along with the New Haven, Connecticut production location. Yes this is the same Whitney Company that was founded by Eli Whitney, who is credited with inventing the cotton gin. The action on the gun works well on all positions. It has matching serial numbers of 2,249. According to Flayderman's Guide they made about 33,000 of these revolvers from the late 1850's into the early 1860's. The barrel still retains a very nice amount of the original factory bluing and the hammer has the case coloration from the factory. The rest of the metal parts have a pleasing tone. You can still see some of the cylinder scene going around the cylinder. On the handle it has a very attractive pair of original 2-piece walnut grips intact with a beautiful look to the wood. On the underside of each grip you can still see the stamped, matching serial numbers. This is a great displaying gun from the famous Whitney Company.
