This is a very nice display piece for the price. It is the U.S. military hat of the style that was popular with the local and state militia during the 1870's. This is the classic style or the early Indian War era. As you can see it has some wear but still displays quite well. It has the tarred leather top with the body still being in fine shape. On the front of the hat it has the large insignia that denotes it being from a member of the 12th Militia regiment. It has an original Crimson color pom-pom that has been added to enhance the display. On the sides it still retains the insignia with the state seal of New York design so you know it was for the 12th militia. As you can see it looks great. The original brim is present and in fine shape. When you turn the hat over you see the original makers label, but there is no longer a sweatband remaining. It also has the majority of the New York retailer's label of the famous JJ.C.F. Deeken Company and it has the address of 160 Grand Street. The maker's book states that they were at this address from 1872 until 1878. So we know within a 6 year time span exactly when this hat was made. This is a fine looking display piece for your relic room.
