This is your opportunity to own a very scarce and very desirable version of Confederate staff officer's sword. This is the straight bladed staff and feel officers sword that was produced in Nashville, Tennessee by the firm known to collectors as the College Hill Arsenal. The handguard of the sword has the large distinctive "CSA" lettering. It has the blank banner that would later contain the famous "NASHVILLE PLOW WORKS" marking. You can still see a nice amount of the original factory gold gilt wash on the brass of the handguard. It isn't often that you encounter these with the gold still remaining. It has the distinctive large size smooth edge pommel cap intact as well. The handle of the sword has the original wooden core covered by the reddish-brown leather which is original to the sword. It still retains the original double twist copper wire on the handle but as you can see it was separated and is now loose. The blade of the sword is full-length with a few waves from use over the years. On the front side of the blade it has the ornate script style "CSA" lettering. It also has the flowing vine engraving on both sides. On the back side of the blade it has the etched Confederate First National pattern flag towards the base. Just above the image of the flag it has what remains of the soldier's name identification. It is quite hard to see but it reads "J. E. CAGE". This would've been a very high-end Nashville made officers sword at the start of the war. The records show that Captain J.E. Cage served with the 42nd Tennessee Infantry. He was part of the Confederate Army that was captured at the battle of Fort Donelson but he was later able to escape. In the large file of history that accompanies the sword it shows that the sword was uncovered in the 1960s in Illinois. It stayed there until 1989 when it was purchased to become part of the Museum like collection of Mike Miner. About 10 years ago, country music legend, Hank Williams, Jr. and I purchased the Miner collection in its entirety. It has spent the last several years in Hanks personal collection. This is your opportunity to own a very desirable Confederate made Nashville made staff officer's sword with the blade identification.
