Here is an extremely scarce Tennessee gun. This belt style pistol is marked by the Nashville maker and retailer Thomas Gowdey. The gun itself is approximately .50 caliber in bore size. It has the full-length 4-3/4th inch octagonal barrel. the top flat of the barrel is marked Nashville, and the breech is inlaid with two silver bands and features a floral pattern engraving. The rear action lock is marked T. Gowdey and features floral engravings, with the nipple bolster having a sunburst engraving. Thomas Gowdey was born in Castlewellan,County Ireland in 1795, he was a lieutenant in the British army and fought under Lord Nelson. After being wounded and disabled he moved to Charleston South Carolina, in 1818 then Madison Georgia where he pursued a mercantile business. In 1823 he married Ann Power and moved to Nashville in 1825. Gowdey operated a very successful store and was a leading Nashville citizen. Gowdey passed away in 1863 so we know it was made before then. The triggerguard is engraved silver with a pineapple form finial. The curly maple stock has two silver ferrules, a silver forend cap, a wooden ramrod with a silver tip and an engraved silver compartment in the butt. The stock also features German silver escutcheons, and has an iron belt hook/sideplate. The German silver oval at the wrist has an engraved H. All of the screws on the pistol are engraved. This is a wonderful Nashville marked single shot pistol. This is the first one of these pistols we have been able to own. Don't miss your chance. You might not get another.
