Here is a very cool book with a double identification. This is the 1862 dated printing of "GENERAL ORDWERS AFFECTING THE VOLUNTEER FOR, ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE. 1862". It was printed by the Government Printing Office and is so marked on the title page. This one covers the General Orders that affect the Quartermasters. The title page has the ink inscription identifying it to "Capt. T.E. Hall. Camp Nelson Oct. 10th 1863." It also has the pencil inscription of "E.B.W. Restieaux." When we looked the soldiers up we found that Hall served int he 21st Massachusetts Infantry and then the Quartmaster's Department. He rose to the rank of Brevet Colonel in 1865. The other name is Edward Boylston Walker Restieux who was commissioned into the Quartermaster's Department in February 1863. Opposite of the signatures, it has the label where Restieaux donated the book to the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1872. It also has the stamp where the Society discarded the book. Even back then anything that was donated could be de-assed and sold. Think before you donate. A brief history of both men will accompany the book.
