What a great knife! This is a fine large size horsehead bowie knife. This pattern is attributed to the famous English maker, Edward Barnes & Sons, Sheffield. It is undated but this pattern was made circa 1850. It is designed with a finely crafted 9 inch clip point blade. When the knife is in the sheath it has an overall size of 16 inches which is a fine large size. These have the German silver crossguard that is molded with foliage designed on each side. It has the delicate quillions with the scrolled tips. It has the original grip that is made of single piece of dark horn. On the front side it has the unadorned shield-shaped German silver escutcheon. What makes this one really stand out is that it has the large German silver horsehead pommel. These break easily but this one is nice and complete with fine detail. It is accompanied by the original high quality sheath. The sheath is complete with the attractive German silver mounted body. The body is covered in the original gilt-stamped green leather. The verbal history is that this knife was sold by legendary dealer, Robert Abels in 1979. Mr. Abels stated that although the maker's marking has been removed, the maker was most certainly Edward Barnes. This is a gorgeous looking large size knife.
