This is a rare excavated Civil War uniform button for the state of Arkansas. These are one of the most coveted of all Civil War uniform buttons. This is one of the most desirable of all Civil War uniform buttons. This is the one that was made for the 2nd Regiment of Arkansas Infantry. The buttons are 22.5mm in size. These buttons were produced by the New Orleans, Louisiana firm of Casimir Rouyer. One version shows up with their maker mark and the other is like this one that is unmarked with a blank channel. The front of the button has a large five pointed star in the center. Around the edge it read "C.S.A 2D ARK. RGT." Just outside of the lettering it has a rope like design. These buttons were produced of thin brass and become damaged very easily. Pristine versions of this button are almost nonexistent. As you see this one has the usual push to the face but the face still retains a superb amount of the original silver wash that is almost always missing entirely. This is the style listed as figure AK6 in Albert's button book and AK250a2 in Tice's button book. This is great looking button that is a rare as they come.
