What a great looking uniform. This is an original Civil War officer's frock coat. This is the double breasted pattern that was worn by a soldier with the rank of Major. The coat has a dark blue wool body. The collar is nice and tall at 1-5/8ths inches. It has the beautiful double-border bullion shoulder straps with dark blue velvet centers that let us know it was worn by a member of the infantry service. It has the mothing from the years in the soldiers attic but that gives it a cool ancient look that you can tell saw service. The coat has the nice wide Civil War width at the elbow that is 9 inches across. The coat is adorned with the New York officer buttons. These are the tougher to find style of the coat size uniform button from the state of New York. This is the version with the eagle in the center and the New York military shield on her chest. Below the eagle it has "EXCELSIOR” written. The New York authorities ordered this button produced in 1858 for New York general and staff officers, except engineers and miners and sappers. The original back is intact with a perfect shank. This has the tougher to find maker’s mark of "SCOVILL MG CO WATERBURY” in the small letters. This is the version that is listed as figure NY28 in Albert’s book and NY218A1 in Tice’s button book. The interior lining of the coat has the stitched green wool satinette with tighter quilting and two interior breast pockets lined with brown cotton twill. It has the original well worn off-white cotton sleeve linings. The coat has the nice additional feature of the two pockets in the back by the matching New York buttons. This is a very attractive original Civil War double breasted frock coat from the State of New York.
