This is an original Civil War officer's frock coat that displays well. The jacket is constructed of deep blue, almost black wool material that retains all of its nine Scovill Button Company made uniform buttons on the front and two buttons at each cuff. These buttons are made for a soldier from Vermont. On the face is the classic Vermont state coat of arms. The seal of Vermont was designed in 1778. It depicts the wooded hills in the background representing the state’s Green mountains and it has the sheaves and cow to depict the state’s agriculture. Above the seal it has the stag’s head with "VERMONT” above that. In the ribbon below the coat of arms it has the state motto of "FREEDON & UNITY” with 13 stars below that. The buttons were manufactured by the famous Scovill Manufacturing Company that was located in Waterbury, Connecticut. The coat is constructed with distinctively tailored sleeves with the 9-1/2 inch elbows and then narrowing dramatically to 5-1/2 inches at the cuffs and tufted shoulders. On the reverse of the coat, the tail buttons are present and in fine shape. The coat is designed with the 2 tail pockets inside. On the shoulders are stitched a pair of Infantry 1st Lieutenant's shoulder straps with blue velvet centers with a beautiful blue color. They have the single bar on each side that denotes the Lieutenant being a 1st Lieutenant. This is a very well-crafted coat. The top has the original collar that measures 1 inch tall. When the coat is opened, the crafting of the inner lining shows that this garment was finely tailored not just quickly assembled. The interior has the typical quilted green polished cotton body lining. The sleeves of the coat are correct and date it to Civil War era. The white sleeve lining is present with a pleasing look. This is a beautiful original Civil War officer's frock coat from Vermont.
