This is a gorgeous excavated button of a very scarce style. This is the version that is listed as GA20 in Albert's button book and as GA259A1 in Tice's button book. This is the button that would have adorned the coat of a member of the elite Lamar Mounted Rifles of Georgia. The Lamar Mounted Rifles served as Company H of the 5th Georgia Cavalry during 1863 and 1865. Tice states that before 1863 they probably served with the 1st or 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalions. The face of the button has the Georgia Arch on a lined background. It has the "M. RIFLES" at the top of the arch and at the bottom has the "1861" date. These were manufactured around the 1861 date by the Waterbury, Connecticut Company of Steele & Johnson. They made the button with the backmark of the famous Horstmann & Allien Company of New York and it is so marked on the reverse. In our 30 years in th ebusiness, this is the first one of these that we have been able to offer. Don't miss your chance.
