This is a wonderful set! This is a factory cased original Colt revolver known to collectors as the "Root” model. They have one of the most distinctive designs of the Civil War era. This one is .31 caliber and has the classic model 1855 sidehammer design. The action still functions on the positions. The cylinder on this revolver is the style that has the stagecoach hold-up scene on the side. The original grip is present has a fine dark look to the walnut wood that is nice enough to of been used in any piece of fine furniture. There is a fine amount of the factory varnish remaining on the wood as you can see in the images. The serial numbers are 8,727 which would have been made in 1864 which was only the fifth year of production for this pattern of revolver. They only made these .31 caliber sidehammer Colt revolvers from 1860 until 1870 and they only made a little over 14,000 of them. One thing that is special about this revolver is that it has the British style proof markings on the major parts. This is a scarce trait to find on one of these guns. The majority of these "root" revolvers have 3 1/2 inch barrels but this one has the full-length 4-1/2 inch barrel. Across the top of the barrel is the Colt maker’s mark as well as the New York City location. New York City was the location of Colt's office but the actual production of the gun was manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut. The gun still has a beautiful amount of the original bluing from the factory on the metal parts. In addition to the fine condition of the gun is that the gun is accompanied by the original factory casing from Colt. The box is made of fine wood with the dovetailed edges and it still has the brass screws holding it together. It has the brass key hole as well as the inlaid brass escutcheon on the top. When you open up the lid you see that it still has the accessories in the divided compartments. It has the brass bullet mold and L-shaped gun tool. It also has the cleaning rod and oiler. It even has some of the original bullets in the lower right compartment. It has the beautiful bag style flask that it complete but the spring at the top has a separation. The case even has the scarce Colt marked percussion cap tin from Eley. A wonderful thing about this case is that it still has the original paper Colt label on the lid. The label has the location of Colt's London address and instructions for the gun's use. This is a very attractive and complete .31 caliber Colt "Root” Revolver with accessories in the original factory case.
