This is an impressive knife! This large size Bowie knife measures 15 inches in overall length with an impressive 10 inch blade. At the base of the blade it has the famous maker marking "JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS CUTLERS TO THEIR MAJESTIES NO 6 NORFOLK STREET SHEFFIELD ENGLAND". It also has the trademark of the Rodgers firm which was a star and Maltese cross. The Rodgers firm was one of the most famous knife makers of all time. Even Herman Melville referred to them in his famous book Moby Dick in 1851. He tells of how Ismael' reaction to the sight of Queequeg shaving with a Harpoon. He says "Thinks I, Queequeg, this is using Rogers' (Misspelled) best cutlery with a vengeance." They went into business by at least 1724 and made blades until they closed in 1983. In 1821, Joseph Rodgers and Sons secured an appointment as cutlers to His Majesty King George IV, an honor which encouraged them to greater efforts and stimulated their competitors. When the reign of Queen Victoria began in 1837 they switched to "Cutlers to Their Majesties" to "Cutlers to Her Majesty". With the England marking this knife would have been made in the 1850's or 1860's. This wonderful knife is still fitted with the original Gutta Percha Grips with a German Silver Crossguard. Each panel has the floral and geometric design with a Griffen design down towards the crossguard. One grip is excellent and the other has some age cracks as you can see. The knife is accompanied by the original sheath. The sheath has the dark brown Moroccan leather body with the silver top mount and drag intact. This is a very impressive weapon.
