This is a great looking set! This is an original .22 caliber rimfire revolver made by the famous firm of Smith & Wesson. It is the pattern known to collectors as the Smith & Wesson Model number 1 Second Issue revolver. They made this pattern of revolver from 1860 until 1868 and they made a total production of about 117,000. They started numbering this model at about 11,000 and the numbers run to about 128,000. This one has matching serial numbers of 111,057 which according to the Smith & Wesson book by Jinks & Neal this would have been made in 1867. He states they the serial number at the start of 1867 was 106,317 and that they ended the year in 120,373. They are very attractive little guns that only measures 7 inches in overall size and they have the 3-3/16ths inch long octagonal barrel. Across the top of the barrel it has the makers mark of SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS. They fire 7 shots from the short rimfire cartridge cylinder. The frame is made of brass and it still retains a fine amount of the plating the brass. This one retains a nice amount of the original silver on the frame and backstrap. This one has the original 2-piece walnut wood grips intact with a good look. The hammer of the gun still has nice spring and the cylinder still rotates as it should. What makes this one so special is that it comes inside of a beautiful original Smith & Wesson gutta percha casing. This is the case for the Model number 1 First Issue but this model looks great inside the case as you can see. The case is made of the thermoplastic material that is referred to as gutta percha. As you see, the case displays beautifully with the slight wear and a couple of stress lines in the thermoplastic. The top of the case has the image of a Smith & Wesson revolver and proudly reads "MANUFACTURED ONLY BY SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS". The case measures 8 inches by 4 inches in overall size. When you open up the case you see the green lining on the top lid that is trimmed in red to matches the lower section. The red has aged to a beautiful brownish tone. It also has the section that was designed to hold the metallic rimfire cartridges. You get the pistol as well as the beautiful gutta percha casing.
