This is one of the toughest to find of all patterns of Civil War era swords. This is a Foot Officer's Model 1840 with embellishments for a staff officer's sword. This is a sword similar to the one used for the illustrations on page 225 and 226 of the great book by John Thillmann entitled Civil War Army Swords. The hand guard of the sword has the classic design with the eagle that is perched on lightning bolts on the clamshell. What is special is that the eagle is applied to the clam shell of the guard. On the back side it has the folding style clam shell with the Oval stamp containing the "E.L." lettering and the three stars. This is the marking of the Paris, France sword assembler E. Lyon. The pommel cap has the ornate design with the ornate detail. In the middle of the bow of the handguard it has the floral and leaf design. On the quillion of the sword guard it has the matching leaf design. All of these little touches show the quality manufacture of this beautiful sword. The handle of the sword has a gorgeous look with the grip being made of brass with a false twisted wire design. The blade of the sword is full-length at 31 inches and still has a very fine amount of the original etching on both sides. On the front side it has the floral, geometric and patriotic design. In the center it has the Union eagle with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" motto that means "OF MANY, ONE". On the back of the blade it has the equally beautiful designs that include the large bold letter "US" lettering. At the base of the blade, it has the correct French style proof marks. The French manufacturers created many quality pieces that were imported and sold to the well-to-do Union soldiers. Along the spine of the blade you can still see traces of the Klingenthal Arsenal marking. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is also beautifully constructed using brass with gorgeous brass hardware. The scabbard is beautiful with the brass mounts, rings, drag. It is missing the applied brass throat and it has been gone for eons. As you can see the detail on the sword mounts in drag are as intricate as that of the rest of the sword. This is your opportunity to own one of the toughest to find of all Civil War swords and it has a gorgeous look all over. This one is a keeper.
