Very Cool & Crude Original Confederate Foot Officer's Sword
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very cool looking Confederate sword. This is the classic Confederate manufactured version of the non-regulation Model 1850 foot officer's sword. This is the pattern of sword that was designed like the French pattern foot officer sword but this one is purely Confederate in all regards. It is a style that would have been worn by the lower ranking Confederate officers. This sword is one of the many non-maker marked officer swords and is a variation I haven't encountered before. The blade is full-length at 29-3/4ths inches. The blade has the long single fuller going down each side. The grip of the sword is similar to the double branch style manufactured by the firm of Boyle & Gamble in Richmond but it is much cruder in construction that their products. You can see on the front and back of the hand guard that they tried to add a floral design but it blurred. This is because they were more concerned with getting a weapon in the field than making a perfect beautiful sword. It has the wooden core with the black leather. The double twist brass wire is present the handle with a very pleasing dark look. The brass hand guard and the pommel cap each have the gorgeous thick attic patina all over with a gorgeous look. What a cool sword!
