J. Church of Hartford, Connecticut Made Massive Mounted Officer's Sword

MASSIVE! This is one of the most impressive and massive swords you will find. This one is a mounted officer's sword from the early 1800's. It has the full-length blade that measures 36-1/2 inches in length. The blade is nice and wide with a superb amount of the original fire blue and gold detail work from the factory. On the front side it has the "Warranted" quality marking in the gold wash and etching near the base. In the center of the detail panel it has the Liberty Cap as well as the panoply of arms. The back side of the blade has more detail work that displays beautifully. It ahs the original gilded brass handguard intact that is just as massive as the sword blade itself. It has the classic "P" style design with a huge quillion. On the blade side of the guard it has the vividly clear maker's marking stamped into the metal. It reads "J.CHURCH / HARTFORD". The sword maker book by Bezdek states that Joseph Church was a swordmaker in Hartford, Connecticut starting in 1815. Judging by the construction, this sword would have been made shortly after that probably the 1820's. In my 30 years in the business, this is the first one of his edged weapons that I have been able to offer. The sword has the gilded brass backstrap intact with a pleasing color. The actual handle of the sword is made using a ribbed piece of fine quality bone. What makes this sword extra special is that it is accompanied by the original scabbard. With the massive length of the sword combined with the deep curve it is amazing that the scabbard has survived all the years since it was made. The body of the scabbard is made of black bridle leather with heavy brass mounts. The mounts and drags are pieced with openings on each side. The drag has a slightly deeper dark tone and may be a museum quality replacement. This is a fantastic sword form a scarce Hartford maker.
