Pristine Non-Excavated Maryland Coat Button With Canfield of Baltimore Backmark

This is a superb button. It is an original Civil War coat size uniform button for the state of Maryland. This is the version listed as MD11 in Albert’s button book and as MD200a2 in Tice’s button book, both of which we sell. The special thing about this button is that not only is it a Civil War version but it has one of the best backmarks you’ll fin don one. The reverse clearly reads "CANFIELD BRO & CO. BALTIMORE”. In Tice’s button book he even makes a notation that this style of button is what appears on one of the coats that was worn by Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The face of the button has the Maryland state seal with a fine look. The seal shows the quartered coat of arms in the center with an eagle up above. There is a farmer supporting the shield from one side and the other side is held up by a fisherman. They both stand on ribbon with the motto of the state of Maryland in Latin. It reads "Crescite et Multiplicimini” which translates to "Increase and Multiply”. The word "MARYLAND” is in bold block letters across the bottom. The face of this button is as nice as you will ever find it has 99%+ of the original gold gilding remaining. This is a great Non-excavated Confederate coat button with a very desirable maker’s mark.
