Rare Non-Dug Silvered 1-Piece Militiay Eagle With Fine Silver GI51F
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a scarce button! It is a non-excavated coat size Militia pattern button. This is the version listed as GI51F in Albert's button book. It would have been made about 1820 or so. The button is constructed of one piece of copper with the silver wash to make the button stand out. This one retains a superb amount of the original silver that has turned dark over the years. On the reverse it is missing the applied brass shank. The face has the Droop wing style eagle with the shield beside her. This is the version with the blank shield. The eagle scene is on as lined field with a wide solid border. It has a thick untouched patina all over which just gives it a beautiful look. On the reverse you can read traces of the backmark. This is a gorgeous looking original 1-piece silvered militia button.
