Non-Excavated Civil War Era Union Buttons From New York
RMDC Backamrked New York National Guard Button NY18
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat button because of the backmark. The face has the Civil War style design for the New York National Guard. It has the flying eagle on the face with the shield coming from her beak. Above her is the "EXCELSIOR" wording. The face of the button has a beautiful amount of gold gilding remaining. What is interesting is the backmark. It has the RMDC (raised Mark Depressed Channel) of the firm of H.V. Allien of New York. Usually when you see and RMDC backmark it is Civil War but with this mark it dates form after the Civil War. Almost all of these RMDC markings are early but this one is the exception. It is the pattern listed as figure NY18 in Albert's button book and NY208A5 in Tice's button book. This is a very nice button that has a neat twist to it.
