Authentic Artillery Implements of the Civil War Era
Scarce 200# Version Civil War Cannon Bore Cleaning Sponge
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original sponge for a Civil War cannon. This is the large version known as a 200#er cannon from the Civil War. This would work in rifle Parrott cannon with a bore diameter of 8 inches. There weren't many of the cannon and the accessories that accompanied them are quite tough to find. This is what the cannoneer used to clean out the bore of the cannon after it was fired. It is made of an almost carpet like material and you can see the remnants of the 200 size marking on the base. This one is in nice unissued condition. This piece came from the massive collection of Bannerman in New York. Bannerman bought up the Civil War surplus from the government after the Civil War. He and his family sold these authentic Civil War pieces for decades. This is a perfect piece of Civil War artillery history.
