Here is a type of powder flask that you seldom encounter. This is the version that is known to collectors as the "PUBLIC PROPERTY" rifleman's flask. In the book by Ray Riling he states that "This (Public Property Flask) was the first contract between the Government and a contractor for metal powder flasks. The March 17, 1825 contract calling for 2,000 flasks was awarded to James Baker of Philadelphia. Delivery was acknowledged on March 3, 1827. The flasks had been shipped from Liverpool, England on the ship Montzuma. Another 3,000 of the flasks were contracted with Baker on November 7, 1827. Although their is no definite documentation as to the description of these flasks, it has been generally held that these flasks are those of the type and design known as the "Public Property" flasks." The flask itself stands 8 1/2 inches tall and is 4 inches across. On each side it has the embossed beautiful style horn which was used during the time as a rifleman's insignia. Below the horn. On one side it has the block letter "PUBLIC PROPERTY" lettering. This was added to the flask as an effort to keep the soldiers from keeping the flask to use in civilian life. This strategy has been used several times over the years by the government as a way to keep their supplies. This one has a gorgeous untouched color all over. It has 2 of the original four original strap loops remaining on the sides with another one being replaced. At the top of the flask it has the original spring and spout intact and they are fully functional. This is a superb piece all the way around.
