Original 1862 Dated Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by The Ames Company
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice original Civil War naval cutlass. It is the classic model 1860 that you associate with the Union navy of the Civil War. The blade is full-length at 26 inches in overall length. At the base of the blade you can no longer see the maker's mark but it would have had the classic scroll style maker's mark from the famous Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was the only company that made these model 1860 naval cutlasses for the US government. On the base of the front of the blade it has the "1862" production date still clearly visible. There wasn't another American-made navy cutlass model until the U.S. model 1917. It has the basket style guard still present with a nice golden tone to the brass. The handle has about 80% of the original leather intact and it has a pleasing look all over. The sword is missing the scabbard as is so often the case with these swords. Originally it would've had a leather and brass scabbard. Their fragile construction is the reason they are almost always missing. This is a good honest Civil War naval cutlass with the 1862 production date, that is still affordable.
