11th & 109th Illinois ID'd 6th Plate Ruby Ambrotype of a Union Civil War Soldier
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a great looking 6th plate "ruby" ambrotype image of a Civil War Union infantryman in his enlisted style frock coat. These ambrotype images were produced on red tinted glass. This is the size that is known to collectors as the sixth plate size. It measures about 2.75 inches by 3.25 inches in overall size. This image is very clear. The image shows the seated view of a young soldier with an innocent look on his face. He wears his enlisted style frock coat and his forage cap on his head. In his arm he has his .69 caliber Springfield musket with the bayonet affixed to the end. The image comes in a complete leatherette style case and displays well as you can see. The case has a repair to the spine. When I bought the image I took it out of the case and found a pencil name of "D.M. Hulshouser". The records show a D.M. Holshouser who served with the 11th and then later the 109th Illinois Infantry. The records show that he served from August of 1862 until July of 1865. He was promoted from Private to the rank of Corporal of the 11th Illinois. This is a great looking Ruby ambrotype image of a soldier from Illinois.
