Here is an original check that was signed by Confederate General James Alexander Walker (1832-1901). Walker attended Virginia Military Institute but was expelled when he challenged Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson to a duel but it was never fought. Jackson would later recommend Walker to be a Brigadier General. He was appointed as Colonel of A.P. Hill's 2nd Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. During the Civil War he was severely wounded at Spotsylvania. He was a 2 term Congressman from Virginia Senate after the war. This is a check that was made out by him and he signed it boldly by the name of his law firm "Stokes & Walker". The check is dated from June 9th 1874 and is drawn from the Merchants National Bank of Richmond, Richmond, Virginia. It measures 7-7/8ths inches by 2-7/8ths inches in overall size. The check comes in an acid free holder for display and preservation and is accompanied by a modern made xerox image of the walker in civilian clothes.
