Series of 1874 10 Cent Fractional Currency With William Meredith Image
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original piece of Civil War "Fractional Currency". The government had gotten people used to coins but they tried to print paper money instead of the coins because it was less expensive. It is for the amount of ten cents. The face of the note has the image of William Meredith who served as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Department under President Zachary Taylor. Also on the front it has the red overprint that was added for aiding prevention of counterfeiting by making the note harder to copy correctly. This one was issued under the act of June 30th 1864 and is so dated in small letters in the back right hand side even though it was issued as a series of 1874. It is well designed as you see and has the green designed back that is very ornate. The note measures 3-3/8ths inches by 2-1/8th inches in overall size. It is in well circulated condition and will make an attractive addition to your Civil War currency collection.
