He was commanding the Brooklyn Navy Yard when the Civil War broke out. He held the rank of Commodore and was given command of the Union naval forces on the upper Mississippi River. He commanded the river operations on the forts at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson working with Union General Ulysses S Grant. Congress promoted him to the rank of Rear Admiral on June 16, 1862. His final service to his country, was commanding the South Atlantic blockading squadron. On his way to assume that command, he died on June 26, 1862 from Brights disease. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. On the back of the card it has the stamp on the card stock. This is the photographer mark of the Chicago firm of J.
