Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat looking 6th plate tintype image of a Civil War Union infantryman in his enlisted frock style military coat. These tintype images were produced by applying the image to a thin sheet of tin, hence the name. This is the size that is known to collectors as the sixth plate size. It measures about 2.75 inches by 3.25 inches in overall size. This image is vividly clear. The image shows the standing view of the soldier and he is standing by a lady which is likely a wife or daughter. She is wearing the beautiful antebellum dress. What makes this one special is that he has on the insignia of the quatrefoil cross design on his chest. This is the insignia for the 18th Corps. He holds in his hand a .22 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver. The image is in an original leatherette case but has the mat and glass intact. This is a great looking tintype image of an 18th Corps soldier.
