State of Missouri $100 Note With Jefferson Davis Image
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a scarce Civil War $100 from the State of Missouri. Across the top of the note it proudly proclaims "MISSOURI DEFENSE FUND" as well as "THE STATE OF MISSOURI". This one is in unissued condition. It was never signed and numbered but they didn't make these after the Civil War so we know it was Civil War production. In the center of the note it has the image of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In the center of the note it also has the large red ink protector "100" printed onto the paper. This was to help in the prevention of counterfeiting of the note. In the lower right hand corner it has the great seal of the state of Missouri. In the lower right hand corner it has the portrait of a maiden standing by a pillar holding grain in her hand. On the reverse of the note it has ornate green ink printing. In the center of the reverse it states "Missouri Defense Bonds are secured by a pledge of all the STATE REVENUES and receivable in payment of all Taxes and DEBTS DUE THE STATE". It also has the "100" denominations flaking the writing on each side. This is a very desirable note that is in uncirculated condition and it displays superbly. What makes these notes extra interesting is that The Confederate sympathizing Missouri government was not able to release these into circulation before going into exile at Marshall, Texas. The overall size of the mote measures 7-1/4th inches by 3-1/8th inches and was printed by Keating & Ball of Columbia, South Carolina. It comes in an acid free holder for display and preservation.
