Here is a neat piece! It is an original autograph of Brigadier General Howell Cobb(1815-1868). Yes that's right the Confederate General that not only served as a Governor from Georgia but formed Cobb's Legion from the peach state. Howell Cobb was born in Jefferson County, Georgia on September 7, 1815. Before the Civil War he was a law your that served in Congress from 1843 until 1851 and was the speaker of the house from 1849 until 1851. Then he was elected governor of the state of Georgia. In 1855 he returned to the U.S. Congress. President Buchanan made him secretary of the treasury in 1857. Cobb only held the rank of Brigadier from February 12th 11862 until September 9th 1863 when he was promoted to the rank of Major General. He died in New York City on October 9, 1868. This is a fine ink autograph that reads "Howell Cobb" and has "Athens, GA" noted below the signature. The piece of paper measures 3-1/8th inches by 1-1/2 inches. It comes beautifully framed with a modern xerox image of Cobb in uniform. The frame measures 6 inches by 2 inches. A wonderful autograph of this important Georgian.
