Excellent Gilded Brass 1862 "Battle Badge" with General Porter Image
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fantastic piece of history! This is an original Civil War production badge. This is the style that they listed in the Civil War advertisements as "NATIONAL BATTLE PINS". This pin is made of 2 pieces of stamped brass. The shield shape front has the scales of justice at the top with the 1862 date. Below that it has Lady Liberty with the crossed sabers below. In the center it has the small oval image of a General. They offered these with multiple choices of Generals. This one shows the image of Union General Fitz John Porter. General Porter was born on August 31, 1822 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He graduated from West Point with the class of 1845. He was brevet it for gallantry during the Mexican war and was assistant artillery instructor at West Point from 1849 until 1855. On August 7, 1861 he was made Brigadier General of volunteers. And served faithfully to Union General George B McClellan. He served very effectively during his command but suffered because of Washington's dislike for General McClellan. He was court-martialed after the battle of 2nd Manassas and dismissed from the Army on January 21, 1863. 16 years later he was exonerated and restored to his former rank. He died in Moorestown New Jersey on may 21st 1901. The back of the piece has the smooth stamped brass piece and it has the original straight style attachment pin. These were advertised in several of the finer publications of the Civil War including the Hrpers weekly papers. The last couple of images show the ads. This is a scarce and beautiful piece from all angles!
