This is the famous Colt revolver known to collectors as the "Lightning". This was officially known as the Model 1877 of the .38 caliber double action Colt revolver. This one has the full-length 4-1/2 inch barrel it has the clear Colt maker's mark as well as the Hartford, Connecticut production location. The major parts have the serial number of 49,463 which would have been made in 1884. There is a crack at the breech of the barrel along the top of the frame where it must have blown at one time. It gives it come character. It is the version that is made with the ejector rod underneath the barrel and it is still present. On the left hand side of the frame you can see the patent dates. On the handle of the gun it has the hard rubber grips with the "Rampant Colt" style horse on each panel. The mechanics of the gun cocks back and snaps correctly as it should. This gun also has a couple of cool things going for it. It is accompanied by the original leather belt holster that is in nice complete shape. It also has a police badge. The badge is from the police department in Greensburg, Kentucky. The trio of pieces are also published in one of the Colt reference book. On page 130 of the book by the Colt Collector's Association entitled Colt and Its Collectors. It is a fine looking color image as you see. This is a nice original Colt Lightning revolver with holster and badge that is published!
