Great 6th Plate Tintype Image of a Union Soldier Wearing a Tall 1851 Infantry Shako
Click on an image to enlarge

Here is a nice looking Civil War tintype image of a young Union soldier. This is the size that is known to collectors as the sixth plate size. It measures about 2.75 inches by 3.25 inches in overall size. The image is done on a tin plate. The image is nice and clearly visible. It shows the seated soldier from the knee up and he has on his enlisted man's style "shell" jacket. The soldier is very young and is sitting up straight. On the shoulders he has on the officer shoulder straps. On his head he proudly wears the classic model 1851 Shako military hat. On the front of the hat it has the insignia. This insignia is the 1834 pattern of open hunting horn that lets us know that he served in the infantry branch of service. The photographer gilded the horn as well as the buttons on his coat to make it more lifelike. The image has the brass mat and glass as well as half of the original leatherette case. This is a nicely looking image with a classic hat!
