Original 1863 Dated Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by The Ames Company
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice original Civil War naval cutlass. It is the classic model 1860 that you associate with the Union navy of the Civil War. The blade is full-length at 26 inches. At the base of the blade it has the remnants of the maker's mark with the scroll style maker's mark from the famous Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames is the only company that made these model 1860 naval cutlasses for the US government. On the base of the front of the blade it has the "1863" production date still clearly visible. Above the 1863 date you can see the "USN" stamping for United States Navy. We know it is a Civil War sword because they stopped making this pattern after the war and there wasn't another navy cutlass model until the U.S. model 1917. It has the basket style guard still present and it is one of the ones that were silvered on the brass. It still has traces of the silver remaining. The handle has the original leather hanging on. These swords never had wire wrapping. The sword is accompanied by and original scabbard to enhance the display. The scabbard on these cutlasses have the brass body that is held together by rivets on the reverse side. This one has all of the rivets intact. This is a good honest Civil War naval cutlass with the 1863 production date.
