MEDICAL SOLDIER! 1/4th Plate Union Sergeant With Medical Department Insignia
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a cool looking 1/4th plate tintype image of a Civil War Union infantryman in his enlistedman's frock style military coat. These tintype images were produced by applying the image to a thin sheet of tin, hence the name. This is the size that is known to collectors as the quarter plate size. This means that the image measures approximately 4.25 inches by 3.25 inches in size. This image is nice and clear. The image shows the standing knee-up view of the soldier. He wear his enlisted frock style military coat and has the three stripes on the sleeve chevrons which denotes the rank of Sergeant. What makes this one extra special is what is on the lower part of each sleeve. These are the distinctive insignia that lets us know that the soldier was serving in the Medical Department. There were two style of the sleeve bands. The first is just an open field of green which denotes the Ambulance Corps and the 2nd has the medical insignia which denotes the Hospital Steward. I think I can see the medical steward insignia on this one. As you can see this mage has the wear to the surface but is still legible. It comes in half of a leatherette case. This is a great looking tintype image of a Civil War medical soldier.
