SHERIFF ISSUED! 1862 Dated Luray Virginia Issued $1.00 Note
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a cool note! This is an original $1.00 note that was issued in Luray Virginia. What makes these notes interesting is that they were issued by Page County Sheriff B.F. Grayson. They issued a short series (only three denominations) of notes that were secured by a deposit of Confederate bonds and that were receivable for taxes or redeemable in Virginia bank notes in the fall of 1861. It id dated October 1st 1861. The left hand side it has the oval with the Virginia state seal. This note is in fully intact, unrepaired condition but, not surprisingly, it has some of the hallmarks of time in circulation such as edge nicks, minor edge roughness, and minor stains. Notes issued by Grayson are scarce. This is a cool piece from Virginia.
