Scarce Bank of Howardsville, Virginia $5.00 Bank Note 1856 Dated
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is one that is seldom seen. This is an original $5.00 bank note from Howardsville, Virginia. This one was issued by the Bank of Howardsville. These were used from 1856 until 1861. The Bank of Howardsville was authorized by the General Assembly in 1856. It originally operated as a free bank until just before the beginning of the Civil War when it began issuing unregistered notes. The bank's ultimate fate is somewhat unclear, but it was very likely a casualty of the war. This one is the free bank issue $5 from 1856 and this style is much tougher to find than the more commonly seen unregistered version that issued just weeks before the commencement of hostilities. Although the two designs are identical in most respects, this free bank issue has a simple red FIVE protector to help prevent counterfeiting. It is very well worn but still displays well.
