RECRUITING BROADSIDE! Freedonia, New York 1861 Dated Broadside for Volunteers
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a wonderful original Civil War soldier recruitment printed broadside. This one is the perfect size for framing. It measures 13-1/2 inches by 20-1/2 inches in overall size. These were designed to be nailed up in a visible location for a temporary time to get enough men to volunteer for military service. Since they were only to be used for a short while, there are very few of them that survive. They were never designed to survive. This one is vividly clear but the paper is quite brittle. When we acquired it, it has separations along the fold lines. We mended it using museum quality, acid free repair tape. This is a very neat broadside because of the wording. It is advertising the need for two musicians and one wagoner to join the Eagle Brigade. It is from Fredonia, New York and would date from 1861. This broadside tries to convince them to enlist by promising "The greatest Inducements...for Volunteers," including "fifty cents for every twenty miles travel from home to the place of muster...allowance at the same rate from place of his discharge to his home, and...the sum of one HUNDRED DOLLARS!" in addition to regular wages. It is undersigned and dated in print, October 16, 1861 by T.H. Allen, who was authorized to raise a company for the Eagle Brigade at Fredonia. This is a great piece from the famous collection of Norm Flayderman. Mr. Flayderman was a legend in the collecting and published many books on the antique arms collecting. He is best known for his Guide to Antique Firearms which is a mainstay of any antique gun collecting library. This is a fantastic piece of recruiting history!
