6th Plate Ambrotype of a Union Soldier With His Tin Drum Canteen
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original ambrotype image of a Union soldier from the Civil War. It shows the stern looking Yankee standing with his hand resting on a chair by his forage cap. He has on his frock style uniform coat with double rank chevrons on his sleeves. This means he held the rank of sergeant. Across his chest is the cartridge box sling strap with the eagle breastplate. He appears ready for action. One thing that is extra special about this image is that hanging by his side, opposite of the cartridge box, he has the tin drum style canteen. This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. This means that the image measures approximately 3 inches by 3.25 inches in size. These ambrotype images are done by applying the image emulsion onto a ruby colored glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. The image comes in a beautiful gutta percha case for display. The brass mat is the patriotic style design with the flags at the top. It has the odd tinting fade but still displays well. What a neat image.
