Rare Confederate Enfield Pattern Cartridge Box by Isaac Campbell
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very scarce piece of original Civil War era soldiers accoutrement. This is an original cartridge box for an Enfield pattern military rifle. This is the version of cartridge box with the innermost compartment that has the single tin with the 5 compartments to hold the packs of Enfield cartridges. The metal is in excellent condition as you can see in the images. It has the complete inner flap intact with both of the side "ear" covers. The underside of the outer flap has the English style maker mark stamping of the desirable firm of Isaac & Campbell of London. It is the pattern written and illustrated on pages 342 and 343 of the book on Confederate imported pieces entitled The English Connection. The original closure tab is an old leather replacement that is done quite well. The original large size brass finial on the bottom of the box. It has both of the tinned roller buckles still present as well as the strap loops on the back of the box. You see quite a few of the American made cartridge boxes but when was the last time you had an opportunity to own an Enfield pattern cartridge box. This is a beauty so don't miss it. This piece of history came from the museum like personal collection of Mathew Woodburn.
